Friday September 11th

Dear Parents and Students,
This Friday, September 11th, we will be showing President Obabma's speech addressing the nations school. We have previewed the speech and found it relevant to our students understanding of their own responsibilities in their schooling. We do appreciate your concerns and hope that you have also previewed it. If you would Not like your child to watch with the school please sign and return this slip to your child's teacher by Thursday. Thank you!

{September Book Report}

This month's book report is a book sandwich. In your child's homework folder is the papers needed to complete the book report. Book Reports are due Thursday October 1st (along with your September reading calendar.) Hopefully the following pictures and description will help you with what it is supposed to look like.

1. Write the book title, author, illustrator (if there is one), and your name on the BREAD top.

2. Write a one paragraph summary of the book on the LETTUCE piece.

3. Describe or draw the book's setting on the TOMATO.
4. Describe a part of the book that you thought was sweet or sad on the ONION.
5. Describe the main character in one paragraph on the MEAT.
6. Write about a part of the book that made you happy on the CHEESE.
7. Tell what you liked or didn't like about the author's style on the BREAD bottom.

8. Put your sandwich together with a staple, brad, ribbon, or ring.

{September Book Orders}

Book orders are coming home in your child's homework folder on Tuesday! Please check them out. If you would like to order books there are 2 ways you can do it. You can send the order form and a check to school with your child, or order online with your card. To order online follow the directions below.

1. Use the information below to access the Scholastic Book Clubs Web site.
2. Browse the titles with your child and place your order with your credit card.
3. Your order will come to me, and your credit card payment will go directly to Scholastic’s secure server. There’s no need to send money to school.
4. After I submit the entire class order to Scholastic, your order will be delivered to our classroom for your child to take home.

{Science with M&M's}

What do you think will happen when you pour warm water on an m&m? We asked this question during science last week. Using the 5 steps of the scientific process, we later experimented and came up with a conclusion. It was a fun experience to see the students come up with different hypothesis' and seeing the results. We did the experiment twice, once with warm water and the second with hot water. The kids loved it! We discovered the water changes color, the shell disappears, the M will come off last-sometimes floating to the surface, and we are left with the chocolate and peanut. The temperature of the water, determines how fast these things happen! *** Look at the notes the students took, they did an awesome job in describing what happened!

{Rounding Rap}

In math we are trying to conquer the math concept of rounding! Our class did an awesome job on the Friday when we reintroduced the concept from 2nd grade. To help our class remember we learned a rap about rounding. Ask your child to perform the rap for you!

Rounding Rap

Find the place value and circle that digit;
Move to the right and underline-- get it;
0 through 4 (1,2,3,4) the circle stays the same;
5 through 9 (5,6,7,8,9) add one is the game;
Now flex your muscles like a hero;
Digits to the right turn to a zero;
All other digits remain the same;
Yo! You’re a winner at the rounding game!


We had the girls perform and the boys perform, these pictures don't show the awesome singers that they are.... They had an awesome time! We will continue to rap and practice rounding next week!

{Homework Reminder!}

Please make sure you go over your child's Drops in the Bucket sheet with them. This is a huge help to me, and then you can have an idea of how they are doing also. Before sending it back to school, please Sign the top of the paper so I know you looked over it. The homework pages DO need to be signed each week.

{2nd Grade Readers}

If you are a 2nd grade parent, I will be taking your email off of our blog at the end of the week. If there are any pictures you would like from the blog, be sure to save those on your computer before Friday. I have loved having your child in my class, and truly will miss them!
